Having studied painting at Naples’ Academy of Fine Arts, Pietro Marcello ventured into the world of cinema self-taught. Ever drawn to literature and the history of art, the Italian filmmaker has always displayed audacity and sensitivity in his approach to film, reinventing its rules without upsetting its true nature. In 2004, his documentary Il cantiere won the Libero Bizzarri Prize for the successful promotion and diffusion of the documentary genre. Three years later, in 2007, his debut feature film Crossing the Line earned a number of accolades, but it was 2009 which proved a real turning point for the Italian director, who not only triumphed at the Turin Film Festival but also at the Berlinale (in the Forum section) by way of his feature-length work The Mouth of the Wolf [+see also:

(his first full-length fiction film) - an adaptation of Jack London’s eponymous novel which was presented at the Venice Film Festival - struck a chord with critics and audiences alike. His new documentary Per Lucio, which is dedicated to the singer-songwriter from Romagna Lucio Dalla, will be presented at the 2021 Berlinale.

For her part, Mexican-Salvadorean director Tatiana Huezo Sánchez avails herself of the seventh art in order to portray her country and the contradictions and violence which inhabit it. Hers are films of denunciation but also of poetry, both sensitive and aesthetically powerful in kind. Huezo Sánchez made her name internationally in 2011 by way of her first feature film El lugar más pequeño, which was presented in a world premiere at none other than the Visions du Réel Festival, where it won the Grand Prize for Best Feature Film. Then, in 2016, she directed Tempestad, which was presented in a world premiere in Berlin (within the Forum section) and which later walked away with four Ariel Awards (considered to be among the most prestigious prizes awarded within the Mexican film industry). This year will see her revealing details on her first fiction film, intitled Noche de fuego.
