Screen Ireland announces a €1 million support package for the animation sector

Screen Ireland, the country’s film agency, has announced the details of two strategic initiatives to support the growth of the local animation sector, investing €1 million as part of a further innovation fund made available by Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media Catherine Martin TD.

Specifically, these initiatives are the creation of a dedicated Concept & Creative Innovation Development Fund and the opening of a Talent Development Academy for Animation, both established to help face the industry challenges brought about by the health crisis (and increased international competition) as well as to explore the new opportunities offered by emerging technologies. The Concept & Creative Innovation Development Fund, managed in partnership with Animation Ireland, will invest a total of €400,000 in innovative, high-concept development and business growth opportunities for the animation sector. The fund will support a diverse and broad range of talent, genres and formats that anticipate high-value national and international success. The establishment of the Talent Academy for Animation will be possible thanks to a €600,000 investment, and will be useful to develop diverse creative talent from across the country, ensuring further educational and career opportunities for new and established talent alike.

Speaking about the provision, Screen Ireland’s chief executive, Désirée Finnegan, commented: “The Irish animation industry has earned global acclaim for the extraordinary calibre and stunning artistry of its work. The sector is renowned for the animated feature films and TV shows it produces, which are not only multi-award-winning, but are also watched by millions around the world. Screen Ireland is dedicated to supporting the sector as it demonstrates resilience in the face of the challenges arising from the pandemic. We would like to thank Minister Martin TD for this funding designed to support international scale, and encourage creative innovation through emerging tech and increased skill development so as to respond to the animation industry’s continued growth.”

Meanwhile, Animation Ireland’s chief executive, Ronan McCabe, added: “Animation Ireland would like to thank Minister Catherine Martin TD for this support. Irish animation has proven to be robust and viable during the challenges of 2020, and we look forward to working with Screen Ireland, and other stakeholders, in consolidating Ireland’s success, as one of the best places in the world to produce high-quality animation.”

The deadline for applications for the Concept & Creative Innovation Development Fund is 12 February 2021, whilst that for the Talent Development Academy for Animation has been set for 22 January 2021.
