Czech producers Bionaut and Mall.tv, together with Netherlands-based sales agent Dutch Features, have confirmed a sequel to the successful web series #martyisdead by writers Jaroslav T Miška and Jan Stehlík, and director Pavel Soukup. The new season, which will be called #annaismissing, is set to start shooting in early 2021 and is planned to be delivered in the late spring of that year.
#martyisdead was nominated for an International Emmy this year, the first Czech series ever to have got a nod, and won both the main prize at the Serial Killer festival and the Award for Best Series at Finále Plzeň (see the news). The eight-part thriller series is inspired by real cases of cyberbullying and tells the story of 15-year-old Marty, who is unexpectedly found dead. All he left behind is a trail of horrific videos shot just before he died. His grief-stricken father pieces together the chilling bits of Marty’s online life in order to uncover the circumstances of his tragic end.
#annaismissing will revolve around the investigation into the kidnapping of a child, 14-year-old Anna, for black-market videos. The project is currently in development, and the producers are working closely with the police and experts in internet safety, to not only create a suspenseful format, but also to illustrate the carefully planned system of social engineering and the vulnerability of the victims of online predators.
Dutch Features will be selling the series internationally at this year’s MIPCOM global entertainment market, running online from 12-16 October. Also in Dutch Features’ slate are the Colombian animated series Storytime with Sound Effects and the Dutch revenge-thriller The Columnist [+see also:
film profile], starring Katja Herbers (Westworld, The Americans) as a columnist who has decided to take bloody revenge on her social-media trolls. The film premiered at the EFM earlier this year and recently won the Audience Award at North America’s largest genre festival, Fantasia.
