Usually unspooling on the Croisette within the larger framework of the Cannes Film Festival, Fabrique Cinéma has decided to press ahead with its 12th edition and has unveiled the 2020 list of ten projects, which this year comprises five first feature films and five second features, with absolute gender parity in terms of the filmmakers selected.

Geared towards identifying and supporting the rise of young creators from southern and emerging countries, the exact shape of the programme organised by the Institut français is yet to be announced, in line with the evolution of the health crisis. But a sponsor has already been chosen by the team: French-Algerian director Rachid Bouchareb (a Cannes competitor in 2006 and 2010, and a Berlin contender in 2001, 2009 and 2014).

Standing tall among the ten projects selected by Fabrique Cinéma 2020, and representing Europe, is the documentary Gina by the Montenegrin Sara Stijović, whose homeland will thus participate in Fabrique Cinéma for the very first time. Already enjoying the support of the Film Centre of Montenegro, the filmmaker’s first feature project is steered by Branimir Žugić for LIVE Production. Gina tells the tale of Gina Markuš, a young Montenegrin who was imprisoned in Yugoslavia in the 1950s and sent to the Naked Island to serve her sentence. A few years before committing suicide, Gina put pen to paper to document what was happening to her...

Since 2009, 111 projects hailing from 63 countries have been selected by Fabrique Cinéma, under the aegis of the Institut français (in partnership, this year, with France Médias Monde, SACEM and the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, with the backing of Orange Studio).
