Santiago Segura has been able to take it fairly easy while partaking in the recent film awards ceremonies – the Forqués as well as the Goyas – because at the beginning of January, he took a three-week break from shooting his new feature, Padre no hay más que uno 2, which he had only just started filming and which is due to go on general release on 17 July 2020. It is the sequel to the biggest Spanish box-office smash of last year, Padre no hay más que uno [+see also:

, which grossed more than €14 million. And as was the case for the first chapter, the star of the Torrente saga is again directing, producing and starring in the film, accompanied by his daughters Calma and Sirena Segura.

This second instalment will also feature the rest of the protagonists from the first: Toni Acosta, playing the mother; the children, Martina D’Antiochia, Luna Fulgencio and Carlos G Morollón; the brother- and sister-in-law, played by Leo Harlem and Silvia Abril; and the housemaid (Peruvian actress Wendy Ramos). Again co-written by the director and Marta González de Vega, the screenplay (which this time is original, rather than being based on an Argentinian movie, as was the case with the first instalment) will include several new elements: “With the runaway success of the virtual assistant ‘Conchy’, Javier (Segura) has become the champion of mums’ chat, and everything’s running smoothly. He seems to have everything under control, but an unexpected announcement turns his entire world upside down,” explains the synopsis provided by the production company.

“I think the box-office success of the first part was down to the fact that it appealed to both younger viewers and older ones. In addition, it got some very positive messages across,” co-producer María Luisa Gutiérrez told Cineuropa. “The shoot is taking place in two phases: initially from 26 December until 8 January, and then it’s kicking off again on 31 January before wrapping on 2 March. We will release it in the summer, like we did with the first film, because during the summer holidays, kids want to be entertained seven days a week.”

Padre no hay más que uno 2 is a production by Bowfinger International Pictures, Mamá se fue de viaje la película AIE and Atresmedia Cine, in association with Sony Pictures International Productions and with the involvement of Amazon Prime Video. It has received €1 million in support from the ICAA. Its Spanish distribution will be overseen by Sony Pictures Entertainment Iberia.
