The script, penned by the director himself, is based on Martin Bengtsson’s 2007 autobiographical novel In the Shadow of San Siro. The story revolves around Bengtsson’s experience as a 17-year-old football wonderkid, freshly recruited by Inter Milan, whose dream turned into a nightmare when he started suffering from depression and tried to commit suicide.

Speaking about the plot to Nordisk Film & TV Fond, veteran producer Piodor Gustafsson explained: “The film is really about a young man – Martin – who discovers things about himself and is transformed. Football is just an arena to tell this coming-of-age story. But the film does raise the problem of mental illness within the high-pressure, money-driven world of professional football, which affects about 30% of the top players in the world.”

The international cast includes actors Erik Lönngren (the TV series The Bridge, The Disciple [+see also:

Tigers is being co-produced by SF Studios (Denmark) and Art of Panic (Italy) in association with public broadcasters SVT and RAI. The project is also being backed by the Swedish Film Institute, the Danish Film Institute and the Torino Film Commission, among other institutions. Paris-based sales agent Wild Bunch will handle international sales outside of the Nordic countries, whilst Stockholm-based firm TriArt is in charge of its Swedish release, slated for October 2020.
