Less Is More 2020 ready to host new projects
- Up-and-coming filmmakers are welcome to apply to become one of the 16 selected to develop and produce their next limited-budget feature film
Under its main motto of “Limitation fosters creativity”, Less Is More (LIM) has opened the call for its 2020 edition. A total of 16 writers and directors will have a chance to participate in next year’s programme, which will allow them to develop and produce their next limited-budget feature film.
The LIM programme is composed of three one-week residential workshops in three European destinations – Poland, France and Lithuania – starting in March and ending in October 2020. During these workshops, the participants will have a chance to brainstorm with script consultants and other filmmakers. The first stop will be in the Krakow region in March, then a fishing village on the Brittany coast in June will welcome the LIM team, and finally, the programme will wrap in the countryside just outside Vilnius in October. Besides these workshops, the participants will be in constant communication, as regular deadlines and online sessions with their tutors will ensure that the process is followed to the letter, and that there will be a regular exchange of ideas and follow-ups in the course of the eight-month programme.
The call is now open, with the deadline set for noon on 31 October, and LIM would like to welcome filmmakers who are aiming to develop and produce their debut, sophomore or third feature. Potential participants should already have a proven track record of work, either with their previous short or feature-length fiction or documentary films, or in the fields of visual arts or theatre. As the LIM manifesto states, their next film should have a limited budget, and in order to apply, their project must be at an early stage of development, which will allow them to devise and follow a new route. In addition to actual script development, the scheme involves meeting potential producers or co-producers and financial partners.
As Antoine Le Bos, LIM artistic director, states: "Cinema is a powerful storytelling tool for today, plugged into our dreams and our nightmares, which can restore our ability to create meaning, for now and for future generations. LIM uses creative limitations as a tool. Its spirit and ambition far exceed the facile business of restricting budgets. Self-imposed limitations help dig deep into character and emotion. They are a catalyst for wall-breaking film experiences."
It's worth noting that Less Is More is the latest, deeply innovative feature-film script-development programme supported by the Creative Europe – MEDIA programme of the European Union. The programme is led by France’s Le Groupe Ouest, and has been developed in conjunction with Control N (Romania), the Vlaams Audiovisueel Fonds – VAF (Belgium), Krakow Festival Office – KBF (Poland) and the Transilvania International Film Festival – TIFF (Romania), in partnership with the Lithuanian Film Centre, the Norwegian Film Institute, the North Macedonia Film Agency and the Brittany region (France).
