MIA market reveals 2019 platform and partnership with Hot Docs
- Hot Docs and MIA Doc will sign in Toronto a collaboration agreement in order to make the partnership official
Italy’s MIA – Audiovisual International Market presented its 2019 platform at ITALY@TIFF 2019 in the grounds of Campbell House, in collaboration with Hot Docs. Present were MIA director Lucia Milazzotto, head of the Doc Division at MIA Marco Spagnoli, Hot Docs programming director Shane Smith and Primitive Entertainment’s Michael McMahon. For its 2019 edition, MIA market, running from 16-20 October in Rome, announced a partnership with Hot Docs, on which Lucia Milazzotto commented: “MIA serves as the platform for Italian industry professionals and talents to access new international co-operations and partnerships, and it plays a role in the global framework of international co-productions. With funding incentives within and through the Italian market, MIA seeks to develop new Italian content with global appeal and talent. We are building strong partnerships around the globe and are delighted to announce our partnership with Hot Docs. It will fulfil the strong demand for Italian documentaries on the global market - and build interest in co-producing and widening business landscapes.”
At the Toronto International Film Festival, Hot Docs and MIA Doc will sign a collaboration agreement in order to make the partnership official and celebrate it. Said partnership basically aims to enable a mutual exchange of visibility for the two partner events as well as their content. The Italian pre-selection for Hot Docs will be carried out with MIA Doc's help, while in Toronto, MIA Doc will introduce the audience to the opportunities offered by its Pitching Forum and the boosting tools that MIA offers as a whole: a growing and vibrant hub for docs, films and TV dramas. In addition, Hot Docs representatives will be invited to sit on a panel about Canada's creative industry at MIA Doc 2019. The after-panel event will also include highlights and insights into funding opportunities for Italian productions (and co-productions) at Hot Docs (CrossCurrents Fund, Hot Docs Ted Rogers Fund co-productions, Hot Docs Partners equity fund). This will allow Hot Docs to provide information on tangible funding and business opportunities for producers to the whole Italian and European community attending MIA. “We’re very pleased to be collaborating with Italy’s MIA Market,” said Shane Smith, director of programming for Hot Docs. “This partnership will strongly benefit the Canadian and Italian documentary industries, building stronger connections in each market while opening up more production and business opportunities.”
Noting the trends for 2019, Lucia Milazzotto observed: short-serial content - both scripted and unscripted - is the latest innovation to keep an eye on; the European and Italian creative industry has a growing capacity to present innovative content with strong international appeal; in the documentary scene, there is an increasing capacity to engage audiences worldwide with a wide range of diverse content; and scripted and unscripted content for young adults is increasingly in demand.
