EFA introduces this new category to reflect the changes in the cinematic landscape and to celebrate the great achievements in European fiction series. As EFA Chairwoman Agnieszka Holland points out: “For younger generations, series are a much more popular format than theatrically released movies and if we want to remain relevant for our audiences, the EFAs need to reflect that.”

"With this award, the European Film Academy intends to pay tribute to a ground-breaking series, at the same time a passionate cinematic spectacle and a precise depiction of the political and social realities in 1920s Berlin", according to the EFA's press release. Through the eyes of a visiting police detective, Babylon Berlin allows the audience in and outside of Germany to witness the crucial political and social developments on different social levels of the Weimar Republic.

Achim von Borries, Henk Handloegten and Tom Tykwer will be guests of honour at the awards ceremony on 7 December in Berlin to accept their award.
