IFFR’s Limelight section announces its first batch of titles

The International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) is gearing up for its 48th edition, which will run from 23 January-3 February 2019. The Dutch festival has already unveiled a number of titles in different programmes, but Limelight is the one that has already confirmed three world premieres.

IFFR’s Limelight programme mainly focuses on showcasing avant-premieres of cinematic highlights to both national and international audiences. The first of the world premieres is Beats [+see also:

, the latest movie by Scottish filmmaker Brian Welsh, which follows the friendship between two teenagers in a Scottish village during the summer of 1994. At around the same time, the Criminal Justice Bill was introduced in the UK, which criminalised “gatherings around repetitive beats” and spawned the largest counter-cultural youth movement in recent history. American director Steven Soderbergh serves as executive producer on the movie.

The other two titles being world-premiered are helmed by Dutch filmmakers. Clara van Gool has adapted Henry James’ 1903 novella The Beast in the Jungle [+see also:

, mixing costume drama and dance film, and setting the stories during different periods of the 20th century. Finally, in his documentary directorial debut, Camino, A Feature-length Selfie [+see also:

Martin de Vries walks the Camino de Santiago, or Saint James’ Way, the famous 1,600 km pilgrim route from Le Puy-en-Velay in central France to Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain. It is worth noting that of the 16 films announced for Limelight, 15 are European productions or co-productions.
