24h Europe – We Are the Future is being produced by Thomas Kufus for German firm Zero One 24 and Pierre-Olivier Bardet for French outfit Idéale Audience. The project is being backed by German film agency Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, several national public broadcasters, such as the Franco-German ARTE, Germany’s RBB, Belgium’s RTBF and Finland’s YLE, as well as German regional broadcasters such as SWR - Südwestrundfunk (Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate) and Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bavaria).

The documentary will display 60 characters living throughout the European Union, aged between 15 and 30. The directors will follow the hopes, desires and fears of these adolescents and young adults who have the power to transform society and change the future for the better. Special attention will be paid to the main challenges of contemporary society, such as European integration, globalisation, data-handling policies, the increasing value of information, open borders and generational conflicts.

The making of this ambitious project is being coordinated in Berlin by Britt Beyer, Vassili Silovic and Volker Heise, the creator of three previous 24-hour TV marathons shot in Berlin (2009), Jerusalem (2014) and Bavaria (2017), who will serve as a general supervisor. 24h Europe – We Are the Future will be broadcast in real time for 24 hours, with no interruptions, from 6 am on 4 May 2019, all across Europe. This date is no coincidence: that day will mark one month since the completion of Brexit and three weeks before the new European elections.
