Paris-based international sales agent Stray Dogs, headed up by Nathan Fischer, has quite a significant presence at the 53rd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (29 June-7 July), as it has a contender for the Crystal Globe on its slate: Domestique [+see also:

. The film, the feature debut by the Czech Republic’s Adam Sedlák, will have its world premiere on Tuesday 3 July.

Written by the director, the story revolves around a top cyclist called Roman. To improve his performance, he sets up an oxygen tent at home. His obsession with having a sports career, however, renders him oblivious to his wife Šarlota's desire to have a baby. The film tells of the downward spiral of a marriage almost suffocated by a machine that oxygenates the blood. 

“We had been looking for an Eastern European film sitting at a genre crossroads for a long time,” Nathan Fischer explained to Cineuropa. “Domestique is simultaneously a movie about a couple falling apart and a genre film with a phenomenal ferocity and power, and the whole package is executed brilliantly. The atmosphere is fairly claustrophobic, but the story has an international scope, and it’s very high concept, which is rarely the case for Eastern European films. Plus it’s a feature debut, and we at Stray Dogs think that this is truly the type of filmmaker whose movies need help to travel.”
