The 17th Tribeca Film Festival – running from 18-29 April – announced the winners of its competition categories last night. In the European-dominated International Narrative Competition, Smuggling Hendrix [+see also:

 by debutant Cypriot director Marios Piperides was crowned with the Best International Narrative Feature Award. In the other main competition, the Best US Narrative Feature Award went to Diane, written and directed by Kent Jones, who also won the Best Screenplay Award.

The jury, comprising Florence AlmoziniMartha CoolidgeAndre HollandHaifaa Al Mansour and Ray Liotta, bestowed the $20,000 award upon Smuggling Hendrix “for its unique, comedic exploration of a complicated, absurd political situation told in a clear, personal and compelling way”.

The second big winner of the night was The Saint Bernard Syndicate [+see also:

, the first attempt at fiction by documentarian Mads Brügger, which left New York with the Best Screenplay Award for Lærke Sanderhoff’s “refreshingly original script that manages to be truly funny and inventive in its exploration of a culture clash”, and with Best Actor for the “subtle comedic performance” by Rasmus Bruun.

The coming-of-age drama Virgins [+see also:

, directed by Keren Ben Rafael, was the recipient of the Best Actress Award for Joy Rieger, who “brought to life a sassy, sexually naïve teenager that is universally identifiable”. Furthermore, the Best Cinematography Award was delivered to Albert Salas “for his original, daring image-making” in the social drama Obey [+see also:

 by Jamie Jones. It’s worth noting that all four award-winning European films had their world premieres at Tribeca this year.

Also, the Documentary Competition featured a strong European presence, with the Best Documentary Feature Award going to Island of the Hungry Ghosts [+see also:

 by Gabrielle Brady and Best Cinematography in a Documentary Film to Niels van Koevorden for Tanzania Transit. Finally, in the Short Film Competition, Phone Duty, directed by Lenar Kamalov, won the main Award for Best Narrative Short and Late Afternoon by Louise Bagnall went home with the Best Animated Short Award.
