ZagrebDox Pro kicks off with 12 projects
by Vladan Petkovic
- In addition to the Pitching Forum, the event will present a panel on the success of Serbian documentaries, and lectures by Talal Derki, Anna Zamecka and Eva Mulvad
ZagrebDox's Pro industry section has for years been considered one of the most successful training initiatives on the European documentary scene. For instance, three projects from previous editions took part in last year's IDFA competition programmes, and they are now also screening at ZagrebDox. Bernadett Tuza-Ritter's A Woman Captured [+see also:
film profile] (pitched in Zagreb in 2016 under the title My Marish) is playing in the Regional Competition, while two projects from last year, Ieva Ozolina's Solving My Mother [+see also:
film profile] and Feargal Ward's The Lonely Battle of Thomas Reid [+see also:
film profile], are screening in the International Competition and State of Affairs, respectively.
This year, ZagrebDox Pro selectors and mentors Stefano Tealdi and Leena Pasanen have chosen 12 projects from 11 countries (for the full list, scroll down). They will lead the director-producer teams through preparation workshops ahead of the Pitching Forum on 3 March, where a panel of experts will decide on the best projects that will receive the HBO Adria Award (including a diploma and €2,000 for project development), the ZagrebDox Pro Online Mentor Award (a one-year online mentorship with Hanka Kastelicová, executive producer of documentary contents at HBO Europe) and the ZagrebDox Pro DCP Award (including a DCP file upon completion of the film).
In addition to Pasanen and Kastelicová, the panel comprises representatives of film festivals and film funds, broadcasters, distributers and producers: Trevor Birney (Five Point Films), Vladimir Brnardić (HTV), Manuela Buono (Slingshot Films), Carine Chichkowsky (Survivance), Lejla Dedić (Al Jazeera Balkans), Elizabeth McIntyre (Sheffield Doc/Fest), Marko Njegić (HAVC), Andraž Pöschl (RTV Slovenija), Daniel Rafaelić (HAVC), Oliver Sertić (Restart) and Harry Vaughn (Sundance Film Festival).
In addition, ZagrebDox Pro will present attractive side events open to the public, including a discussion under the title "Upswing of Serbian Documentary Film: Joining Forces, Series of Favourable Circumstances, Or…?", with Serbian filmmakers Ognjen Glavonić, Boris Mitić, Jovana Nikolić, Mila Turajlić and Biljana Tutorov, and director of Film Center Serbia Boban Jevtić.
Winner of a European Film Award for Best Documentary Anna Zamecka, who is also serving on the jury, will speak about her work on Communion [+see also:
film profile], focusing on filmmakers' ethical responsibility towards their subjects. Talal Derki, whose Of Fathers and Sons [+see also:
film profile] is screening in the International Competition, will hold a master class on the emotional and practical consequences of making films in war zones in his own country, while Danish filmmaker Eva Mulvad, whose A Modern Man [+see also:
film profile] is on show in the Biography Dox section, will talk about reshaping reality into coherent documentary stories. Slovenian director-producer Miha Čelar will present his transmedia documentary project iISLAND, and Alex Sterian from Sony will introduce professionals to the company's new 6K Venice digital camera.
