2017 brings a 10% increase in box-office earnings in Romania

The Romanian film industry ended 2017 with total earnings amounting to approximately €59.3 million, which equates to an approximately 10% growth over 2016's figures (€53.8 million), according to data made public by Cinemagia.ro, the country’s most popular film website.

The most successful release of the year was Fast & Furious 8, which became the most popular film in Romania since Avatar [+see also:

 in 2009, with almost 700,000 admissions and earnings of almost €3 million. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No TalesStar Wars: The Last Jedi and Thor: Ragnarok followed, with Fifty Shades Darker coming in in fifth place in the overall chart.

The total number of releases decreased steeply, from 211 in 2016 to fewer than 190 last year.

The most successful European film of 2017 was Valerian [+see also:

, with circa €460,000 from almost 100,000 admissions. Other Continental releases fared less well, but 2017 saw an overall increase in the total number of European movies released in Romania.

Statistics on the total number of admissions and the average ticket price are for now impossible to calculate, as the local distributor of Disney productions, Forum Film, decided to stop making public the number of admissions for their releases.

2017 came with a steep decrease in popularity for domestic releases: they racked up only 243,000 admissions, which equates to a fall of approximately 43% compared to 2016's 428,000 admissions. The year's biggest domestic earner was Iura Luncaşu's Unlucky [+see also:

, an independent comedy, grossing €214,000 from 50,000 admissions. The year’s most popular domestic release was Sergiu Ioan Celebidachi’s Octav [+see also:

, with 57,000 admissions and earnings of €186,000.
