Good news for Europe's legion film production schemes following the European Convention's decision of 10 July, to uphold the principle of unanimity for all agreements regarding the audiovisual and cultural domain.
The Convention approved the following text: "The Council rules that in favour of unanimity for the negotiation and signing of agreements in the audiovisual services and cultural domain whenever there the Union's precepts of cultural and linguistic diversity are deemed to be at risk."
This ruling must next be examined and ratified by the EU's heads of government in October. It maintains the power of each individual European country to define its cultural policies and funding mechanisms in complete freedom. The move won the approval of a number of French film and audiovisual industry institutions and associations, like ARP (Writers-Directors-Producers) whose members have always taken a frontline position in the defence of the cultural exception.
