Art imitates life in Wimbledon

They came to see the golden boy of British tennis, Tim Henman, take on Michael Llodra yesterday afternoon. Instead, the capacity crowd at Centre Court in Wimbledon rose to the occasion and performed right on cue: after being asked to cheer on the opening and closing scenes of a fictitious Men’s Singles victory by an aging British player called Peter Colt over an American player called Jake Hammond. Produced by Working Title (Four Weddings and A Funeral) and directed by Richard Longraine, Wimbledon the Movie is a British romantic comedy whose cast may well feature guest appearances by John McEnroe and Serena Williams. Wimbledon the Movie is scheduled for a domestic release in 2004.
