ahead of its Palme D’Or Competition slot at the 70th Cannes Film Festival (17-28 May). Adapted by Ramsay from the novel of the same name by Jonathan Ames, the film follows a war veteran who is hired by a politician to rescue his teenage daughter from a Manhattan brothel and in the process uncovers a morass of corruption.

The film features Joaquin Phoenix, most recently seen in Woody Allen’s Irrational Man and Alessandro Nivola (A Most Violent Year). The UK’s Film4 and the British Film Institute developed the film, with France’s Why Not Productions and Page 114 producing. Insiders is handling international sales. The project was one of the buzz titles at the 2016 Cannes market and Amazon Studios bought US rights.

Ramsay is no stranger to the Croisette. Her shorts Small Deaths (1996) and Gasman (1998) were in the running for the Palme D’Or for Best Short Film and won the Jury Prize. Her feature debut Ratcatcher premiered at Un Certain Regard in 1999 and went on to win a slew of awards elsewhere including a BAFTA. Morvern Callar [+see also:
