Avalon PC gets behind Esteban Crespo’s feature debut
Director Esteban Crespo

Amar (lit. “To Love”) will begin shooting in Valencia on 25 April under the auspices of 45-year-old director Esteban Crespo. The Madrilenian, who has been forging a prolific career as a maker of short films, directed That Wasn’t Me, which ended up as a finalist in its category at the Oscars in 2014. The feature will be produced by Avalon PC, which is also behind the exhilarating cinematic works of Beatriz Sanchís (They Are All Dead [+see also:

, the development of which is in full swing). The funding is topped off by TVE, Amar AIE and Filmeu. Netflix, which is really making its presence felt in Spain, is also involved and will serve as the distribution window for the film all around the world via VoD.

Amar was already the title of one of his short films in 2005; Crespo previously shot Siempre quise trabajar en una fábrica, followed by Fin, Lala (nominated for the Goya Awards in 2010), Nadie tiene la culpa (winner of the Jury Award at the 2011 Montreal Film Festival), La propina and the aforementioned That Wasn’t Me, which snagged the Goya for Best Short Film in 2013, as well as garnering around 100 prizes both in Spain and abroad.

With a screenplay written by Esteban Crespo himself, Amar “will be a movie about intense emotions, in which the viewer’s gaze will be focused on the two main characters, reflecting a world of contradictions that are so typical of youth”, in his own words. The synopsis introduces us to Laura and Carlos, who love each other as if each day were their last – but perhaps this intense passion of a first love will be what lies behind their separation one year later.
