A report published by Figaro Entreprises has revealed a well-guarded industry secret: how much do French film stars really earn? According to the popular publication, top of the table is Jamel Debbouze whose earned Euros2.12m in 2002, followed at some distance Catherine Deneuve with Euros1.15m.

The data includes pre-tax earnings, authors’ rights and box office percentages and the following five names came top: Gérard Depardieu (Euros2m), Jean Reno (Euros1.7m), Christian Clavier (Euros1.6m), Gérard Lanvin (Euros1.6m) and Daniel Auteuil (Euros1.5m). A representative of the new generation of French actors, Samuel Le Bihan was seventh.
Catherine Deneuve is the top-earning actress, followed by Juliette Binoche who earned Euros1.1m in 2002.

The report pointed out that this data takes into account the 2 per cent increase in the average budget of a film, Euros4.45m in 2002 (modest when compared to the huge 17 per cent hike between 1999 and 2001.) The stars’ salaries contributed to this increase: they earned 30 per cent more between 1999 and 2001 for films with budgets of Euros7.6m and they fell by between 15 per cent and 30 per cent for cheaper features.
