11/01/2016 - Viper’s Nest 2 was the most popular Dutch film of last year

2015 proved to be a successful year for the Dutch distribution and exhibition sectors, with a total of 32,951,335 admissions and €275,659,614 grossed in Dutch theatres. This is the highest figure attained in the country since 1967. Certainly, a number of big international films released towards the end of 2015, such as the UK-US co-production Spectre [+see also:

film profile] by Sam Mendes and Star Wars: The Force Awakens by JJ Abrams, partly explain this high record, but the performance of local films distributed throughout the year is not to be neglected either.

The three most popular films of 2015 were Spectre (2,040,481 admissions), Minions (1,611,464) and Jurassic World (1,006,971). Some arthouse titles did particularly well, too, such as US Alzheimer’s drama Still Alice (101,663), and European productions 45 Years [+see also:

It was also a good year for local productions, which overall recorded nearly 6,200,000 admissions and grossed €48,517,256. Will Koopman’s Viper’s Nest 2 [+see also:

film profile] – which was released in December 2014 – continued to make a splash and became the most-seen Dutch production of 2015 (with 818,113 admissions and €6,821,822 grossed).

Michiel de Ruyter’s Admiral [+see also:

film profile] holds the second position in the top five of the most-seen local films of 2015. Released in January, the film, based on historic events, was seen by 693,202 people and grossed €5,957,218. It was followed by Kees van Nieuwkerk’s Ja, Ik Wil! [+see also:

film profile], released in October, which attracted 368,096 moviegoers and raked in €3,058,762.

Jelle de Jonge’s Bon Bini Holland [+see also:

film profile], released last December, came in in fourth position (366,793 admissions, €3,088,542), and finally, Bloed Zweet & Tranen [+see also:

A new batch of Dutch titles is ready for release in 2016, hoping to perform as well as some of the films mentioned above. In the coming weeks, local audiences will discover Ben van Lieshout’s documentary Sketches of Siberia (released on 14 January), Patrick Raats’ animated feature Woezel & Pip Op zoek naar de Sloddervos [+see also:
