07/01/2016 - “We want to offer the most innovative, original and challenging works,” stated new International Film Festival Rotterdam director Bero Beyer

Eight new features, including five European co-productions, have been selected for the Hivos Tiger Awards Competition – the main section of the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), which is celebrating its 45th edition between 27 January and 7 February.

“We want to offer the most innovative, original and challenging works on the biggest platform possible, as well as honouring and celebrating these in the best possible way,” stated Bero Beyer, who is heading the IFFR for the first time. “Not only is the prize money higher, but starting from the upcoming festival, every day a new ‘Tiger’ will be put in the spotlight, with full attention being paid to that film that day.”

Founded in 1995, the Hivos Tiger Awards Competition focuses on emerging directing talents. The top award comprises a €40,000 prize, given to the director and producer of the winning title. A Special Jury Award worth €10,000 will also be presented for an exceptional artistic achievement.

This year’s jury will be made up of Dutch film critic Peter van Bueren, Tunisian actress Hend Sabry, Thai director Anocha Suwichakornpong, Portuguese filmmaker Miguel Gomes and Vienna International FilmFestival director Hans Hurch.

The winners will be unveiled on 5 February.
