Selected by a jury that was this year chaired by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, six young filmmakers have been chosen for the 18th session of the Emergence directing residency, which will offer them the chance to shoot sequences for their feature debuts, complete with the sponsorship of an experienced director, artistic support and professional production resources.

Aurore Broutin has been accepted with Marthy, a tragicomic family tale set in Northern France in the 1990s, and revolving around the clash between a father and his 12-year-old daughter, who love each other – for better or for worse (produced by Les Films Pelléas).

Delphine Deloget will be working on Finistère, which is envisaged as a sort of western centring on the story of a 16-year-old loner, who is forced to face up to the social services when they take his brother and sisters away, and who will then fight for his mother’s dignity; she is a fragile and impertinent woman, like a kind of modern-day “Calamity Jane”.

Mathieu Gérault has been selected with Sentinelle Sud (boasting a screenplay co-written by Noé Debré), which follows French soldier Christian Lafayette, who has returned to the Paris region after surviving a deadly ambush in Afghanistan. This tormented war hero soon gets mixed up in an opium-trafficking operation and treads further down the path to crime.

Iris Kaltenbäck is preparing Les Perpétuelles, which is set in a prison on an island. Its lead characters are a young idealistic girl who is just starting out as a prison warden, and a female inmate suspected of killing a child (produced by Geko Films).

Also featuring among the lucky few is Maria Larrea with Midinette ou la fille de personne, the story of a 25-year-old Parisian woman who simultaneously discovers that she is pregnant and adopted, and who heads off in search of her identity somewhere in the Hollywood Hills (3B Productions).

Lastly, David Roux has been picked with L’Ordre des médecins, revolving around a hardened doctor, who rubs shoulders with death every day in his intensive care unit, and whose private and professional lives will collide when his mother is hospitalised in a critical condition and is sent to a neighbouring unit (produced by ElianeAntoinette).

Since it was created by Elisabeth Depardieu, Emergence has supported feature debuts by such directors as Deniz Gamze Ergüven, Mia Hansen-Love, Katell Quillévéré (read the article), Alice Winocour, Julie Bertuccelli, Joachim Lafosse, Pierre Schoeller, Antonin Peretjatko (read the article), Elie Wajeman and Renaud Fély (read the article).
