by Jean-Claude Barny is this week heading to Guadeloupe to finish shooting. A highly original project as far as French productions go, the second fictional feature film by the director of Nèg maron (2005) tells the story of four West Indians who arrive in mainland France in the 1970s and soon succumb to a life of crime. A loose film adaptation, penned by the director with Philippe Bernard, Thomas Cheysson and Yves Nilly, of the book Le Gang des Antillais by Loïc Léry, the storyline is an uncompromising nose-dive into the disillusioned France of the 1970s. Jimmy Larivière is struggling to make ends meet, support his daughter and find his place in society. Meeting the Gang des Antillais (lit. Gang of West Indians), a group of idealist crooks, an exasperated community that has arrived in mainland France with the Bumidon (the Bureau for the Development of Migration in the Overseas Departments), triggers his rebellion. Jimmy gets tangled up in violence, friendship, rivalry and betrayal: a gun in hand, how can you not become a slave to easy money?

Produced by Serge Lalou, Sébastien Onomo and Anne-Marie Luccioni for Les Films d’Ici, Le Gang des Antillais is being co-produced by Special Touch Studio, Anaphi Studios and Lizland Films. Pre-bought by Ciné+, the feature has notably received financial support from the CNC (Overseas and Images of diversity), Trace TV and the Guadeloupe, Martinique and Midi-Pyrénées regions. The film will be distributed in French theatres by Happiness Distribution.
