With an annual average of 80.5 million admissions recorded outside its territory over the last decade, France is the second-biggest film industry in the world in terms of its international performance, after that of the United States. In 2014, almost 550 titles were scheduled to screen in foreign theatres, with 14 feature films having smashed through the one-million-viewer mark outside the French borders, and 72 having exceeded 100,000 admissions. This success owes a great deal to the go-getting attitude of the French international sales agents – an attitude that they are now famous for. Since 2004, this sector has generated an average of €240 million in receipts abroad every year, a huge chunk of which stems from the sales of French films (an average of €158 million over ten years).

In order to reveal the major developments occurring in the occupation of the international seller, the importance of this activity in funding French cinema, the strategies and risks inherent in this profession, and the changes in the sector, and to map out the markets of today and tomorrow, the Association of Film Exporters (ADEF) has just published a "White Paper on Export". Unveiled by its president, Daniela Elstner (Doc & Film International), at the 25th Film Meetings organised by the ARP (Civil Society of Authors-Directors-Producers) in Dijon, this report dissects all aspects of the profession of international sales, and offers contributions from producers Marc Missonnier (Fidélité Films), Denis Freyd (Archipel 35), Philippe Carcassonne (Ciné@) and Nadia Turincev (Rouge International), as well as from filmmakers such as Céline Sciamma, Michel Hazanavicius, Jean-Jacques Annaud, Philippe Muyl, Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano
