film profile] by Remy van Heugten was the big winner of the 2015 edition of the Golden Calves, the Dutch equivalent of the Oscars, which were handed out on Friday evening in Utrecht. Van Heugten’s feature, which had a total of ten nominations, cashed in in four categories, including Best Film, Best Direction, Best Screenplay (Gustaaf Peek) and Best Cinematography (Mark van Aller).
Screened in competition at the latest International Film Festival Rotterdam, and released in Dutch theatres soon after by September Film, Son of Mine is a Bind production that focuses on a problematic father-and-son relationship, set against the backdrop of the criminal underworld of the province of Limburg (read more).
Lemming Film’s box-office hit Blood, Sweat and Tears [+see also:

film profile], directed by Diederick Koopal, was the other big winner of the night, with three of its cast members coming on stage to receive the Best Lead Actor (Martijn Fischer), Best Supporting Actor (Raymond Thiry) and Best Supporting Actress (Hadewych Minis) Awards.
Georgina Verbaan was chosen as Best Actress for her performance in De Surprise [+see also:

film profile]. Mike van Diem’s romantic comedy was also awarded in the Best Production Design category (Hubert Pouille).

The Abraham Tuschinski Fund Golden Calves were bestowed upon three films, voted for by the public: De Club van Sinterklaas & Het Pratende Paard by Ruud Schuurman (producer Tom de Mol is to invest the €30,000 prize in a new Dutch production), Admiral [+see also:

film profile] by Roel Reiné (€20,000) and Blood, Sweat and Tears by Diederick Koopal (€10,000). The public were able to vote for one of the 17 Dutch films released between September 2014 and September 2015, which had registered over 100,000 admissions at the local box office.
The Film Culture Award went to Sandra den Hamer, the current director of the Eye Film Institute.
