The French-executive-produced film staged by Charles Gillibert for Paris-based outfit CG Cinéma, which was the star attraction of the Directors’ Fortnight at the 68th Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Europa Cinemas Label and was also sold all around the world by Kinology, was today chosen to represent France in the race for the nominations for the 2016 Oscar for Best Foreign-language Film, prevailing over the four other shortlisted titles (read the news). The Oscar will be handed out on 28 February 2016, following the final selection of the nominees on 14 January.

Co-produced by Turkish outfit Bam Films and German companies Vistamar Filmproduktion and Uhland Film, Mustang was backed by the World Cinema Support (helmed by the CNC and the Institut Français) and the Franco-German Mini-Traité. The film, which was distributed in France in June by Ad Vitam, has racked up 443,000 admissions in 13 weeks and is still showing in 126 theatres. In the United States, it has been acquired by Cohen Media Group, which will bring it out on 20 November.
