Those in the running for the award must all “have deep roots in Nordic culture, be of high artistic quality, distinguish themselves with artistic originality, and combine and elevate the film’s myriad elements into a compelling and holistic work of art”.

Most of them have snagged awards on the international festival circuit: Silent Heart at San Sebastian, They Have Escaped at Göteborg, Virgin Mountain at Tribeca and Out of Nature at Berlin. In addition, some have received national film prizes: August four Bodils and a Robert, Valkeapää four Jussis, and Marcimain three Guldbagges.
