Filmadrid: A new arthouse film festival for the Spanish capital

Madrid is in luck. A new film festival is set to get under way in a few days’ time: from 5-13 June, the Filmadrid International Film Festival will be held in various venues (the Spanish Film Library, the Queen Sofía Museum and the Casa Encendida, among others), promoted by the cultural association Pasajes de Cine. It will bring the most demanding audiences titles that have been eagerly awaited in Spain, such as Visita ou Memórias e Confissões (read the news), the posthumous film by the late lamented Manoel de Oliveira (who will have a tribute dedicated to him at the closing ceremony), and Goodbye to Language [+see also:

Young talents Lois Patiño, Salomé Lamas and Juan Barrero, included within the Vanguardias Live sidebar, will interact with the public, bringing their films out onto the streets. Meanwhile, Pasajes de Cine will be providing its support to newcomers of Spanish cinema, such as Elena López Riera, whose short film Pueblo was selected for the Directors’ Fortnight at the most recent Cannes Film Festival (read the news).
Directed by Fernando Vilchez and Nuria Cubas, Filmadrid intends to broaden film-loving culture in the Spanish capital by offering a programme that combines cutting-edge titles with both beauty and exposure, publicising some interesting names that have virtually been overlooked by the movie theatres. The jury members of the Internacional (José Luis Cienfuegos, Salomé Lamas and Ahmad Natche) and Vanguardias (Elena Duque, Alberto Cabrera Bernal and Manuel Asín) sections will be handing out awards worth €1,500 and €500, respectively.
