A loose adaptation by the director and Natalie Carter (nominated for the César Award for Best Adaptation in 2008 for A Secret [+see also:

film profile]) of the novel Si ce livre pouvait me rapprocher de toi by Jean-Paul Dubois, the story of A Kidrevolves around a divorced Frenchman who lives in Paris with his young son. One day he finds out that his father, who was originally from Quebec and whom he never met, has died. And so he decides to head to Montreal for the funeral and to meet the members of his family on his father’s side, who are totally unaware of his existence.

Produced by Marielle Duigou and Philippe Lioret for Fin Août Production, A Kid is co-produced by France 3 Cinéma and Canadian outfit Item 7. Having been pre-purchased by Canal+ and OCS, the movie is also being backed by such sources as the La Banque Postale Image and Manon Soficas. The shoot, which kicked off with three days in Paris, will continue until 18 July in Canada. Distribution in France and international sales will be handled by Le Pacte.

Interestingly, on 10 June, Fin Août will release Un Français by Diastème (read the article) in theatres, which is currently setting a lot of tongues wagging in the media because French exhibitors have apparently cancelled a whole string of preview screenings for the film (which will be distributed by Mars) owing to a fear of things possibly getting out of hand, given its subject matter (the journey of a reformed skinhead, spanning several decades).
