Pedro Almodóvar

If there’s one man in Spain who does a bit of everything, that man is Pedro Almodóvar: he makes the most of handing out a Goya Award to rail against politicians who disregard culture (read the news), he receives a tribute from US screenwriters and he even supports unbridled talents (Wild Tales [+see also:

). Furthermore, usually every couple of years – if conditions are right – he steps behind the camera, whipping up as much of a media storm as a megastar: today he has announced that in May he will shoot Julieta [+see also:

), jam-packed with women (just like All About My Mother). It will star 50-year-old Emma Suárez and 30-year-old Adriana Ugarte, both of whom play the part of Julieta at two different stages of her life, from the 1980s to the present day.

Self-produced by the outfit he manages with his brother Agustín, El Deseo, Almodóvar’s 20th movie will be filmed in the southern setting of Huelva and the northern locations of the Upper Rias in Galicia and the Pyrenees, as well as on set in Madrid. While the landscape has more than just a symbolic value in many of his films, absence, passion, pain and madness will be no less relevant here – in addition to the silence that the original title alludes to.

Besides Emma Suárez and Adriana Ugarte, a variety of other names will earn the coveted label of “Almodóvar boy/girl” through their involvement in this project: Inma Cuesta (playing the loyal and disloyal friend), Nathalie Poza, Pilar Castro, Michelle Jenner, Joaquín Notario, Blanca Parés and Daniel Grao will also be making their debuts with Pedro.

Meanwhile, other actors are set to regain the above honour: Rossy de Palma (as the dour maid; the seasoned actress has worked with the Castilla-La Mancha-born director before in Law of Desire, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, Kika, High Heels, The Flower of My Secret and Broken Embraces), Darío Grandinetti (who appeared in Talk to Her [+see also:
