A total of 19 films will compete for the three awards in Un Certain Regard, the prestigious sidebar section to the main Cannes Film Festival (14-25 May). The last three titles were announced yesterday and they include Soldados de Salamina, the third feature directed by Spain’s David Trueba, bringing the total of European films in this section to nine. Soldados de Salamina was produced by Lolafilms and was released domestically on 23 March onto 100 screens.
The other two titles announced yesterday are La cruz del sur by Argentina’s Pablo Reyero and Crimson Gold by Iran’s Jafar Panahi, winner of the Golden Lion in Venice in 2001 for The Circle. Crimson Gold is scheduled to close Un Certain Regard.
This year’s Regard jury is presided over by Mauritian filmmaker, Abderramhmane Sissako (En attendant le bonheur), whose deputy is Carole Laure.
