27 per cent drop in March

UK cinema admissions reached 10.4m last March, a 27 per cent drop on the same period last year. The first quarter of 2003 also reported a 14 per cent drop on 2002 with a total of 42m tickets sold.
Maid in Manhattan, the romantic comedy starring Ralph Fiennes and Jennifer Lopez topped the March box office with a £7m (Euros10.158m) gross, followed by the remake of the 1988 Japanese horror film, The Ring (£5.4m -Euros7.836m) and Jackass: The Movie (£3.4m – Euros4.934m), based on the popular MTV series.
After the steady fall off reported in February and March, April admissions are likely to climb again thanks to Working Title Films/UIP’s comedy, Johnny English [+see also:

(over £8.6m – Euros12.480m in 10 days) and Disney’s Jungle Book 2 (£3.5m – Euros5.079m) both of which benefited from the Easter holidays. German children’s film, The Little Polar Bear, released by Warner Bros increased its takings by 2 per cent on the weekend of 25-27 April with respect to its opening, the weekend before but under-performed (£72,659 – Euros105,440) with respect to its wide release on to 234 sites.
The Cinema Advertising Association (CAA) still predicts that cinema admissions in the UK will reach a total of 182m in 2003, compared to 176m in 2002.
