Actor Álex Angulo passes away

The theatre, film and television actor Álex Angulo died in a car crash on Sunday 20 July while he was travelling through La Rioja on the Logroño–Zaragoza motorway. According to the Office of the Regional Government of La Rioja, the accident occurred at 5.30 pm, and there was nothing that could be done to save the 61-year-old’s life.

The Biscay-born actor was a highly respected and much-loved figure in the film industry, which has expressed its shock and sadness at the tragic event. After beginning his career as a theatre performer, a profession that he never walked away from, in 1995 he rose to permanent stardom thanks to his performance as the priest Angel Berriatúa in The Day of the Beast, by Álex de la Iglesia, for which he was nominated for a Goya for Best Actor.

(2010), by Óscar Aibar, and for Dying of Laughter (1999), again by Álex de la Iglesia, with whom he also worked on Acción mutante (1993).

From the moment he made his silver-screen debut in 1981 until his untimely death in 2014, Angulo worked on over 60 feature films, and countless shorts, theatrical works and television series, such as Periodistas (1997-1999), thanks to which he found considerable fame all over Spain.
