film profile] is the latest instalment in a trilogy on Israeli women that started in 2004 with To Take a Wife, followed by Seven Days [+see also:

film profile] (2007), all featuring the character of Viviane played by Ronit Elkabetz herself.

Viviane has been trying to divorce her husband for three years, but he won't allow it. In Israel, divorce (gett in Hebrew) can only be granted by a rabbinical court with the consent of the husband, who in the end holds more power than the judges. Thus starts a film set in a single location, in the vein of great court dramas like Twelve Angry Men, in which tragedy blends with the absurd.

The film is a Franco-German-Israeli co-production between Elzevir Film, Riva Filmproduktion and Deux Beaux Garçons. It received support from the Israeli Film Fund (read the interview with its director, Katriel Schory). In France, Les Films du Losange has released 80 copies of the film in cinemas.

Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem first made its French premiere at the Directors' Fortnight at Cannes, where it met with great success (read the article). The film is due out in Germany on 13 November.
