New Law for Madrid’s cinemas
The urban development commission of the municipal authority of Madrid has passed a bill reforming the 1997 Law that regulated the use of venues situated in neighbourhoods that were of outstanding cultural, historic or architectural interest to the city and the nation. Under the new law, cinemas and theatres in these locations will be allowed to stage other forms of entertainment, as long as they screen films and stage plays whenever required to do so.
The reform is a result of intense lobbying by the Association of Spanish Film Impresarios who were worried that centrally-located cinemas and theatres ran the risk of going out of business if they were obliged to programme just their core activities, with a consequent negative knock-on effect on the local economy of the neighbourhoods.
