The Way Out tells the story of Žaneta and David, and their struggle to survive. Their unemployment and their difficulty in communicating with officials are both products of the frequent prejudices against the Roma. The piling-up of debts leads David to consider committing a crime in order to help his family. Non-professional actors were cast in the lead roles to ensure the authenticity of this social-realist drama that reflects a recurrent and untreated problem.

Václav, originally trained as a documentarian, has already succeeded with a similar topic at Locarno, where he won the Silver Leopard for his debut feature, Marian. The black-and-white psychological drama revolves around a little Roma boy, Marian, who ends up in a child foster home that lacks both hygiene and the human touch. The title highlighted the topic of racial discrimination, to which he returns in The Way Out.

The film’s estimated budget is €692,308 and was co-produced by French outfit Cinéma Defacto, whilst also being supported by the CNC. Distribution in the Czech Republic is set for 29 May.
