Last night, one of the most energetic groups in the Spanish film world (albeit not frequently considered part of this sector), the specialised press, was responsible for a fresh and enthusiastic celebration as it delivered the Feroz Awards in the Cine Callao in Madrid. The first edition of the Spanish equivalent of the Golden Globes reflected its original focus on young and rejuvenated cinema, awarding movies such as Stockholm [+see also:

film profile] (Best Comedy Film). The former was produced on a shoestring budget sourced in part thanks to crowdfunding, and the latter is one of the best examples of the new wave of Spanish comedy films.

The ceremony, penned by producer Paco Cabezas and presented by actress Alexandra Jiménez, who impressed thanks to her light-hearted approach and sense of humour, was almost entirely devoid of the politics that are usually part and parcel of the Goya ceremony. The Feroz Awards are an initiative of the Film Journalists’ Association and were founded with the aim of boosting the visibility of Spanish film production and becoming the precursor to the Goyas (we will be able to verify how similar the critics’ and the academy members’ views are on 9 February).
