Alex de la Iglesia takes his first producing steps with Musarañas

For the entire month of January, directors Esteban Roel and Juan Fernando Andrés will be filming in Madrid what will be their first feature length film, Musarañas. Despite the two filmmakers’ lengthy experience as authors of shorts and professors at the Cinema Institute in Madrid, the person attracting the most attention on this project is one of its producers, Alex de la Iglesia, who will be filling the role for the first time in his own film.

Musarañas, set in the grey 1950s, stars Montse, who sacrifices her youth in order to take care of her younger sister, shut up in a sinister apartment in the centre of Madrid. Her mother died in childbirth after which her desperate father fled, leaving both daughters alone. Forced to take on the role of a father, mother and older sister, Montse develops an obsessive and unbalanced temperament.  The only thing tying her to reality is the relationship she has with her younger sister. One day, her life is interrupted by an encounter with Carlos, a young and irresponsible neighbour. He disgracefully falls down the stairs and seeks help out by knocking on the only door he can manage to reach.
