, received the Grand Prix of the 29th Warsaw International Film Festival, which ended Sunday (October 20). “From a superb combination of script, directing, cinematography, acting and music comes a beautiful and delicate film that portrays a post-war Polish society, trying to get past its demons,” said the jury of the international competition.

Traditionally, award ceremonies are not long in Warsaw – last year it took 21 minutes to distribute 14 prizes – but Saturday at the MultiKino 2 it exceeded 40 minutes: festival director Stefan Laudyn waited for Polish actress Agata Kulesza – who plays the lead in Ida – to arrive from Warsaw’s Ateneum Theatre, where she performs in Merylin Mongol. Kulesza accepted the award on behalf of Pawlikowski, who at the same time was presented with the top prize of the 57th BFI London Film Festival at London’s Banqueting House.

Last month (September), Ida cleared the table at Poland’s 38th Gdynia International Film Festival, with Grand Prix-Golden Lions for Pawlikowski (Best Film), Ewa Puszczyńska and Piotr Dzięcioł as producers, and a Silver Lion for Kulesza (Best Actress). At the film’s international premiere during the 38th Toronto Film Festival, it won the international critics’ FIPRESCI award. Pawlikowski, who has made his previous films while living in the UK, also added Warsaw’s Ecumenical Prize to his honours, which was picked up by producer Puszczynska.
