Spanish box office’s fall continues

- The first half of 2013 showed a fall of 18% in audience numbers compared to the same period last year

The Spanish box office is continuing on its downward spiral. In the first half of 2013, revenue amounted to a total of €229 million and 33 million overall spectators, respectively representing a decrease of 14.5% and 18% compared to the same period in 2012. Data is still unofficial as it is as yet unconfirmed by the ICAA (which has still not yet released official figures from 2012).

This fall is even starker if you compare it to the first halves of earlier years, 2011 and 2010. The difference is respectively of 26% and 30%. All in all, from 2010 to 2013, the box office lost €100 million in the first six months of years only.

These figures call for reflection on the current distribution model.
