British prospects on the Croisette

It is clear looking at the list of British films due in 2013 that it is a robust year for the industry. Shortly after Cannes officials made a not so secret visit to London in late March to sample the best of British, the city has been buzzing with speculation about the possible selections. The first name on everybody’s buzz list, and our insider sources, appears to be Jonathan Glazer (photo), whose enigmatic Under The Skin [+see also:

Over at the BFI benugo lounge, the loudest murmurs are about feature debutant Hong Khaou’s Lilting, a possible contender for the Camera D’Or as are fellow debutants Distiny Ekaragha’s Gone Too Far and Paul Wright’s For Those In Peril. Archipelago [+see also:

opened Directors Fortnight in 2007, now ready with UK/Ireland co-production Frank and one can never rule out the irrepressible Stephen Frears whose Philomena carries strong reports.

All will be revealed on April 18, but as Chariots Of Fire writer Colin Welland said during his screenplay acceptance speech at the 1982 Oscars: “The British are coming!”

The Cannes Film Festival runs May 15-26.
