"L’Europe autour de l’Europe" at the heart of Paris

- The 8th edition of this event will begin on Wednesday in Paris, with nine films in competition and a tribute to Neil Jordan

Focusing on author and art films from Greater Europe (47 countries), the 8th edition of the L'Europe autour de l'Europe Festival will open on Wednesday night in Paris, in the presence of Irish filmmaker Neil Jordan (photo), to whom this 2013 edition will pay tribute. Until April 14th, 65 feature films and a selection of documentaries, short films, animated and experimental movies will be screened in about 30 cinemas in the French capital. Nine of them will take part in the competition, which last year rewarded Gipsy by Martin Sulik.

Two Irish movies feature amongst the competing titles. Dollhouse [+see also:

 by Kirsten Sheridan tells the story of the adventures of five adolescents whose parents have gone away on holiday. As for Silence by Pat Collins (coproduced by Germany), it focuses on a sound engineer on a mission to find absolute silence on an island.

The competition also includes the delegate Belgian production The Fifth Season [+see also:

 by duo Peter BrosensJessica Woodworth (unveiled in competition in Venice and winner of the Cineuropa Prize in Les Arcs) and the Greek feature film J.A.C.E. by Menelos Karamaghiolis,which follows the struggle of an Albanian-Greek child who falls into the lap of people-traffickers.   

Two Scandinavian productions are also in the running. Ice Kiss by Norwegian director Knut Erik Jensen explores the double life of a member of the Norwegian embassy in Moscow, who gives information out of love to the KGB during the Cold War. As for the Danish movie Juan [+see also:

by Kasper Holten, a modern adaption of Don Juan, it was nominated five times for the 2012 Roberts awards (annual Danish cinema prizes).

 by Polish director Jacek Blawut (in which famous actors, now in a retirement home, put on a performance of Faust), Un Film d’été by Szabolcs Tolnai, (a coproduction uniting Hungary and Serbia which follows two ad-hoc filmmakers searching for locations) and the Russian film La Horde by Andreï Prochkine.
