- Claudia Gerini, Cristiana Capotondi and Sabrina Impacciatore star in Giorgia Farina’s feature film debut, a dark comedy with an all-female cast, in cinemas on March 7

Three women forced to be friends, an island in Southern Italy, where prejudice and gossip rule, and a secret to die for. Claudia Gerini, Cristiana Capotondi and Sabrina Impacciatore are the three brilliant protagonists in Amiche da morire [+see also:

, Giorgia Farina’s directing debut. The dark comedy has an almost all-female cast, a rarity in this country.

"Female parts, in comedies, tend to be marginal: mothers, daughters, girlfriends, or, at best, lovers,” the 27-year-old director commented, “in my film, women are on centre stage.”

The scene is a little Sicilian island, beautiful and old-fashioned, where polar opposite women are forced to create alliances in order to save their own skin. You have Gilda (Gerini), a Roman escort with a vast array of clients, and a dream to change lives, then there’s Olivia (Capotondi), a perfect wife, young and graceful, who has unexpected homicidal fits, and finally there’s Crocetta (Impacciatore), a hopeless spinster with a reputation  for bringing bad luck to anyone who comes near her. Olivia is a classic airhead, but when it comes to shooting, she proves to be as determined as she is precise. Her husband, suspected of being unfaithful, will end up put in a can with the tuna. The three women find themselves in possession of a bag containing €1 million they will fight tooth and nail to keep, stopped by a policeman, who tries to be taken seriously, but turns out to be completely unprofessional (Vinicio Marchioni).

The result is something that looks completely removed from a directing debut. Money was certainly no object for the newcomer, who received her MFA from Columbia University and has received awards around the world for her shorts.

“We tried to give Giorgia all the production assistance we could, putting her next to some of Italy’s best industry workers,” Raffaella and Andrea Leone, who produced the film with RaiCinema, said. The screenplay was done with Fabio Bonifacci (Il principe abusivo [+see also:

The film, which references include La ragazza con la pistola by Monicelli, is a captivating, ironic and slightly pulp piece, supported by a trio of actresses who lend themselves to the grotesque game well, without taking it too far. Amiche da morire will hit Italian movie theatres on March 7. The film is being distributed by 01 in 250 cinemas and has already been sold in France (Babe Films), in Germany (Beta Film) and in the UK (International Film Distribution Partnership).
