Romanian box office: 2012 brings 11% increase on 2011

- More releases, more admissions and a very good year for domestic films

Hollywood blockbusters and a larger number of popular domestic releases made a change to the Romanian box office landscape - compared to 2011, 2012 brought an 11% increase in revenues and a 16% increase in terms of admission numbers. The total number of admissions amounted to 8,177,924, while the number for 2011 was only 7,038,629, according to data released by the local distributors. As for revenues, the total amount was €32.58 million in 2012 (173 releases), compared with €29.18m in 2011 (168).

The most successful film released in 2012 in Romania was Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, with almost 400,000 admissions, followed by Ice Age: Continental Drift (360,000) and Skyfall [+see also:

Although it was not a very good year in terms of revenues for European films and co-productions, 2012 amazed with the success of several domestic releases, with as many as four films topping 50,000 admissions. Tudor Giurgiu's Of Snails and Men [+see also:

(photo) became the most popular domestic release, with 63,778 admissions, followed by Sweet Little Lies, a MediaPro Pictures film watched by 55,600 cinemagoers. After winning several awards at Cannes, Cristian Mungiu's Beyond the Hills [+see also:

attracted large numbers in cinemas, with 53,000 admissions in eight weeks of screenings. Ho Ho Ho 2: A Family Lottery [+see also:

, also produced by MediaPro, had 50,700 admissions. It's a huge change from 2011, when the most popular Romanian release was The Godmother, with only 26,700 admissions.

As for European films, the most successful release of 2012 was Astérix and Obélix: God Save Britannia [+see also:

, with 30,000 admissions, followed by The Intouchables, with 29,300 admissions.
