Members of the Spanish Film Academy have thus kept in line with last September when they selected Blancanieves as the Spanish contender for the 2013 Oscar for best film in a foreign language over other finalists Unit 7 and The Artist and the Model. These three nominees, all vying for Best Film and Best Director, have been joined by the year's great hitThe Impossible, with its over €40m in earnings just in Spain.

Blancanieves has a representative in each of the acting award categories (Maribel Verdú for Best Acress, Daniel Giménez Cacho for Best Actor, Ángela Molina for Best Supporting Actress, Josep Maria Pou for Best Supporting Actor, Emilio Gavira for Best New Actor, and Macarena García for Best New Actress) and will also compete for Best Original Screenplay (the screenplay was Berger's own work), Best Original Soundtrack, Best Original Song, Best Director of Production, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Production Design, Best Costumes, Best Make-Up and Hair, and Best Special Effects.

Actor Antonio de la Torre has been nominated in two different categories: Best Actor for Unit 7 ( two veterans are also competing: José Sacristán for The Dead Man and Being Happy [+see also:

film profile] and Jean Rochefort for The Artist and the Model, along with Giménez Cacho) and Best Supporting Actor for Invasor (lit. "Invader"). The same category includes Scottish actor Ewan McGregor for The Impossible, a film whose cast has almost entirely been selected for awards: Naomi Watts for Best Actress (to compete against Penélope Cruz for Twice Born and Aida Folch for The Artist and the Model, as well as Verdú). 

One of the most interesting categories for these awards is without doubt that of Best New Director, because of the amount of new directors that emerge each year in Spain. This year, Paco León (Carmina o revienta [+see also:
