Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival announces 2012 award winners

- Ukrainian film House With A Turret wins Grand Prix at Estonian festival

The Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival announced its awards in Tallinn's Russian Theatre last night. With a choir singing the names of on-stage participants and the familiar ‘POFF Wolf’ (the Black Nights Film Festival mascot) wandering the stage, it was a typically offbeat and eclectic ceremony from the Estonian film festival.

The big winner was Ukrainian war drama The House With A Turret by Eva Neymann (photo), which won the EurAsia GrandPrix of €10,000 and also walked away with the Best Cinematography award. Other popular winners were the German comedy drama Oh Boy! [+see also:

by Jan Ole Gerster, which won the festival's 'Red Herring' alongside the audience award. Home-grown winners included popular festival hit Mushrooming, which received the Best Estonian Film nod, while Elen Lotman received Best Cinematography in the Baltic section for new Estonian film Demons.

The festival also presented its Lifetime Achievement Award to Theo Angelopolous, who died last year in a tragic accident. The award was accepted by his widow.
