On his next international assignment, Mikkelsen wiill play Our Kind of Traitor

– and last year received a European Film Award for his "unique contribution to the world of film" - has been signed for US-Australian director Justin Kurzel's Our Kind of Traitor, from UK author John le Carré's 2010 novel.

The role in the spy thriller about an Englishman who accidentally meets a Russian secret agent wanting to defect – and who is subsequently signed by MI6 – is the fifth in a string of international assignments, which Mikkelsen, the son of a Copenhagen cab driver, has in the pipeline.

Currently starring as infamous serial killer Dr Hannibal Lecter in Hannibal, a 13-part US television series shooting in Canada directed by Bryan Fuller, Mikkelsen has played the lead in French director Arnaud des Pallières's Michael Kohlhaas, a new take on German author Heinrich von Kleist's 16th century drama.

...Kohlhaas is in post-production, as is US-Swedish director Fredrik Bond's romance-actioner The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman, with Shia LaBeouf and Aubrey Plaza, while he is yet to start UK director Niall Johnson's western-adventure The Stolen, in a cast with Keisha Castle-Hughes.

Meanwhile Mikkelsen, who had his break in Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn's Pusher (1996) – and who has this year also performed in Danish director Nikolaj Arcel's award-winning A Royal Affair [+see also:

- has also appeared in Danish director Asger Leth's English-language Move On, which was mainly filmed in Hungary.
