, was released in 2004.

This ambitious project starring a prestigious cast (Clovis Cornillac, Emmanuelle Devos, and Laura Smet) received a rather cold reception a the time, as this love melodrama, a classy and classic variation on a literary adaptation, failed to win over the public. This lesson learnt, Fonteyne seems to have wanted to renew with lightness and freedom in Tango Libre. JC, a prison guard, doesn't know which way to turn between his tango partner, his son, and the two men in his life, who happen to be under his surveillance, as both are convicts in the penitentiary where he works.

Tango Libre is a film about the freedom to love, but also the freedom to compose one's family according to one's heart, not one's blood ties. As the characters in turn practice their tango steps, it soon becomes clear that the prisoner might not be who you initially thought it was, and that there are also bars beyond the prison windows. But Fonteyne also adopts freedom as a tone, as he oscillates between drama and comedy without ever choosing sides. Or rather choosing not to choose, not the confine himself to a box. It's a daring choice, especially as he risks leaving some viewers by the side of the road embarked on by JC (played by François Damiens) and his new family.

Tango Libre is produced by Patrick Quinet and Artemis Production, loyal road companions, in partnership with Samsa Films, Une liaison cinématographique, and Minds Meet, with the support of CCA, the Fonds Spa, theVAF, and Wallimage. Cinéart has released it on 8 copies.
