Gulf Stream Under the Iceberg is Latvia's Oscars entry

Yevgeny Pashkevich's Gulf Stream Under the Iceberg is Latvia's submission for consideration for the 2013 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. The film beat of stiff competition from other Latvian contenders including Aiks Karapetjans's People Out There [+see also:

Inspired by the works of Anatole France, the film consists of three love stories that take place in 1664, 1883 and 1990 respectively. With influences from fairy tales, Oriental legends, the Talmud and the medieval books of Cabala, the film is a kaleidoscopic and hypnotic affair.
The film is Pashkevich's first since his feature The Days of A Man became a festival hit when it screened at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1989 and has also screened at such festivals as Moscow and recently won Best Film at the recent FFRiga. It also received ten nominations at the national film festival Lielais Kristaps 2012, winning for Best Feature Film. Pashkevich was also named Best Director alongside cinematographer Gints Berzins and art/set directors Jurgis Krasons and Pavels Parhomenko, who were also winners.
